[예술초대석] 독특한 샤넬 도자기 가방과 블럭을 만드는 KIMI KIM 작가

[서울=뉴스프리존] 편완식 미술전문기자= 부산 파라다이스 호텔에 위치한 갤러리 마레가 2021년 마지막 전시로 15일부터 내년 1월 15일까지 키미킴 작가 개인전을 연다. 키미킴 작가는 뉴욕에서 활동하시는 한국 작가다. 작가의 국내 첫 전시로 유명한 셀럽들과 해외에서 많은 사랑을 받고 있는 작품을 소개하는 자리다.

키미킴 작가는 한국에서 섬유, 공예, 금속, 판화, 그래픽, 도자기 등 다양한 재료와 장르를 경험하고 런던 Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design(센트럴 세인트 마틴 예술 디자인대학교)에서 도자기를 전공한뒤 현재 는 뉴욕의 맨하탄 첼시에서 다양한 주제로 작품 활동을 하고 있다.

미국 뉴욕에서 활동 중인 작가 키미킴(KIMI KIM)의 한국 전시회가 내달 15일까지 부산 해운대 파라다이 스호텔 신관 B1 갤러리 마레에서 열린다.

블록놀이도 예술이 된다. 플라스틱 레고 블럭을 세라믹으로 재구성, 놀이와 욕망을 자연스럽게 담아낸 전시회가 세밑과 새해사이 부산에서 열린다. 뉴욕에서 활동하며 뉴요커와 셀럽에게 주목받는 키미 킴 kimi kim의 작품들이 선보인다.

A new configuration of Claudia Hart ’s Flower Matrix has returned to TRANSFER Gallery with an off-site installation at Gallery 151 in Chelsea, New York.

I first encountered the work of Claudia Hart in 2009 at the now-defunct (but much beloved) Jack the Pelican gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

With The Flower Matrix, Claudia Hart proposes a new kind of liminal space – a seductive environment for viewing her immersive world. Mixed-reality architecture becomes fantastical, embellished by decorative elements embracing an aesthetic of the fake in which technology has replaced nature, sugary sweet and chemically toxic in equal measures.

Welcome to Alice’s Giftshop! was a 3 month presentation, From August through November of 2014, in the window and shop of the New Museum, in downtown New York City. It presented a special edition of augmented-reality housewares created specially for the New Museum Store. With the Looking Glass tableware set, literary nonsense is hidden beneath the seamless surface of elegant “museum store design.” The napkins and placemats were inspired by Lewis Carroll’s 1865 Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and explore a populist culture so addicted to the devices of high technology that it can only bear a world that is filtered through them. The store window display installation includes also Hart’s augmented reality Nue Morte tableware and a Nue Morte quilt. All of these are works of domestic housewares that also function as participatory objects engaging virtual worlds.

ARTIST BIO & ARTIST STATEMENT Kimi Kim Wittling an artist based in New York, has been working in various genres including textiles, woodcraft, print, lacquer, graphic design, and ceramics since 1994. After graduating in Ceramics Design from Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design in London, she has been focusing more on ceramics. Her works feature delicate forms inspired by nature, such as trees, leaves, and petals made from fragile materials like ceramic and “paper clay”. These forms represent the nature of love and care in Kimi’s personal life and how these relationships and beacons of joy are impossibly fragile, yet indescribably precious.

The Invaders series explores the ongoing development of the biotechnological world. Using a variety of traditional printing techniques such as stamping, screen printing, and plotting we use engineered bacteria as inks to create various images. The emoji space invaders image, which biologists not only use as a symbol to text each other about bacteria, is representative of where synthetic biology is in its development of programming life. While the bacteria are designed to be controlled to produce inks and stay in their patterns, they often evolve and grow beyond their initial plan and become collaborators in the artworks themselves.

탈 다니노는 ‘마이크로유니버스’라는 작품을 선보였다. 인간의 몸 또는 흙과 같은 자연에 있는 박테리아가 각각 다른 환경에서 증식하면서 나타나는 다양한 패턴을 여러 가지 색으로 입혔다. 증강현실 어플리케이션 ‘레이어(layer)’를 실행한 뒤 벽에 전시된 박테리아 증식 패턴에 스마트 기기를 가까이 대면 박테리아가 증식하는 과정을 영상으로 볼 수 있다. 다니노는 “사람들은 보통 박테리아에 부정적 이미지를 가지고 있다”며 “박테리아의 아름다움이나 생물학 연구 등에 사용되는 긍정적 측면을 알리고 싶었다”고 작품 의도를 설명했다.

Tal Danino is an interdisciplinary artist and scientist focusing on the emerging field of synthetic biology. His work utilizes living microorganisms like bacteria and cancer cells and transforms them into bioart works using various forms of media.
